Movie Reviews this week looks at the Oscar winning biographical drama The Blind Side.
It is an absolutely charming story, of Leigh Anne Tuohy played by the lovely Sandra Bullock (Speed), and the story of her adopted son, and you can see immediately why she won the best actress Oscar.
She plays a conservative mother in a very nice and well-off neighbourhood, who sees Michael Oher played very convincingly by Quinton Aaron, one rainy night walking aimlessly, she asks her husband Sean played by Tim McGraw (Four Christmases), to stop the car, she asks him where he is heading seeing he is just in a t-shirt in the pouring rain, he says he is going to the gym, she asks him again why he is going to the gym, and tells him the gym closed a while back, and for him not to lie to her, he says he is simply going there because it is warm.
Prior to this, we are told the story of how Mike got into the school in the first place. The coach at this Christian school, Burt Cotton played charmingly as always by Ray McKinnon (Randy and the Mob) had been approached by a fellow to allow his son into the school, as well as Mike, the coach sees Mike and the man’s son playing basketball and sees the potential of Mike making them famous on a sporting arena, so convinces the board that it is their Christian duty to let him in. However in class Mike seems distant minded, and all the teachers are worried as he seems the slowest in the class, except for one particular teacher Mrs. Bower played the lovely Kim Dickens (Hollow Man) who notices Mike remembers the majority of what the teachers are saying, as he is able to describe in his own words the grasp of what it is they are saying, but may not necessarily write it down as eloquently as they wanted. As all the teachers are discussing Mike’s ability one day, wondering if he can write, Mrs. Bower shows them a note that Mike had written that had been thrown in the trash, speaking of his sadness and what the teachers expect of him, to do all the work alone.
Leigh asks where he lives, his parents, or grandparents, Mike shakes his head nonchalantly, and Leigh amazingly takes him to her home, with a mild confrontation with her husband as to how long Mike is going to stay, he asks “This is just for the one night”? Where Leigh nods absentmindedly, but the expression on her face is already thinking of much longer term.
Mike gets along with Leigh’s two children, her son S.J. played very impressively by Jae Head, and her daughter Collins played by the adorable Lily Collins, Leigh asks her how she would feel if Mike moved in with them permanently, she nonchalantly agrees, and when Mike is asked how he would feel moving having Leigh and Sean as his legal guardians, he smiles and thought he was already part of the family.
The Blind Side turns out is a very beautiful movie, of acceptance and love that a young man needs, and the struggle one woman faces with social services, her social circles, and the community in trying to make one boy’s life better, and what makes this movie even more amazing is this is a true story.

* End of the world – 2012 marks the end of the world as people have known it, not the end of the world literally.
* 2012 is also not literal – however 12.21.2012 is a deadline. This deadline marks a time when old behaviors will finally come to a majority end. The pain will have gone on too long and people will finally be convinced that their old patterns are only hurting them and those around them.
* The massive destruction of cities and lives – marks a total breakdown of the old structures and ways of thinking and doing things.
* John Cusack – portrays a person who is lost in a pre-2012 world and empowered in a post-2012 world. Values will no longer be based on your bank account, but based on your deeds.
* People are still living, acting and thinking in a pre-2012 world – anyone who seems lost or crazy right now, like John Cusack or Woody Harrelson represent people who ‘normal people’ need to take a second look at. Ask yourself, “what you are missing?”

Even Mother Nature has had its ‘I’ve had it day’ with all the abuse and imbalances. Ultimately it will be Mother Nature that forces these changes. Most of mankind will get pushed through the door, rather than willingly walk though. Getting pushed happens when you have waited too long. The Avatar Movie by James Cameron – Non-Spoiler Review
To encapsulate the Avatar Movie by James Cameron, it promises to be one of the most spectacular and thrilling movies that you have ever seen.
And this promise is backed up by the single fact that the guy directing this $400 million plus movie is none other than Mr. Titanic, James Cameron. Now, this man has an impressive pedigree that resulted in billions of dollars of movies over his career.
His latest project is of course, The Avatar movie. I will give you a little taste of this movie but of course I won’t spoil it for you by giving out too much information or revealing the conclusion of the story. That would be mean and it isn’t in me to do that sort of thing!
So to continue…
The year is 2154 and Earth has been mining a faraway, Earth-sized moon that has the unfortunate name of Pandora. And the mineral is called, Unobtainium which is the cure for the energy crisis. This mining operation has be ongoing for 30 years and now is encroaching the region that belongs to the indigenous race of humanoids called the Na’vi. They are about 3 meters tall, have a tail and glow in the dark.
As you can imagine, they are NOT happy about the mining operations but Earth is so worried about them that they send in the gung-ho Marines to subdue them.
Unfortunately, the atmosphere of Pandora is quite toxic to humans and there is new technology called, Avatar program that wires up the human mind to an Avatar “skin” which is made up of human and Na’vi DNA to look exactly like the Na’vi, but controlled by the humans on the ship outside of the world. Sort of like the U.S. military controlling the Predator Drones from their bases on the other side of the planet.
So anyway, our hero by the name of Jake Sully cannot use his legs. And the Avatar program is very appealing to him because he enables him to become a wholly functioning being again, as a Na’vi warrior that the military sends into Pandora to infiltrate the Na’vi tribe.
And of course, Jake’s Avatar is rescued by a beautiful and lithe Na’vi princess by the name of Neytiri. And of course there are complications when Jake falls in love with her.
So what to do?
Well, I certainly won’t spoil it for you! You are definitely going to have to watch the movie. And I don’t think you will be disappointed. There are plots within plots. New technology. Beautiful and fascinating flora and fauna plus some really fierce and dangerous animals on Pandora.
With all that going on, you won’t lose sight of the message of the movie, that Jake is going to have to make a decision to obey his superiors and destroy the Na’vi people or to lead the Na’vi tribe against the intruders that want to pillage and plunder the natural resources of Pandora at little or no cost to themselves.

I haven’t read many favorable reviews about this film on the web up to this point even though it received high marks and reviews from private screenings with film critics. Concerning the negative reviews, I’m a bit shocked once again at how quickly the “message” has been matter-of-factly passed over for a more rigid set of imaginary criteria for a good film. I believe that what most critics do not realize is that what makes a great movie is how it leaves you feeling once you’ve reached the end. I’ve alluded to this miss-the-message shortcoming in a previous article of mine citing that the “message” would appear to be more valuable than all the other movie traits combined. How many movies have been deemed unworthy of the mainline movie critics, while movie goers pack the theaters in record volumes, or DVD rentals fly off the shelves? Perhaps Christian movies fall into a completely different critique category altogether?
Here is a short synopsis of Forever Strong: It is the story about Rick Penning (Sean Faris) a talented but troubled teenager who lives life on the edge. Rick plays on the Arizona Razorbacks rugby team where his coach and father (Neal McDonough) doesn’t ever seem to give him a break. Rick, after almost killing his girlfriend in a car accident while intoxicated, winds up in a Juvenile Detention Center where the guidance counselor (Sean Astin) convinces him to join the longtime rival Salt Lake City Highland High School rugby team in an effort to give Rick another shot at playing. He joins reluctantly, torn by the loyalty he feels for the Razorbacks and the valuable lessons and the disciplines for living a clean life he learns while playing for Highland coach Larry Gelwix (Gary Cole). Of course, as Rick is eventually released back into the custody of his parents, the national championship game between Highland and the Razorbacks is about to commence. At this point, Rick will need to decide if he will return to playing for his dad or go back and play for Highland.
It’s unfortunate that some non Christian movie reviews have given Forever Strong a weak rating based on story line and weak character roles. My feeling is that Forever Strong is both educational and entertaining, especially if you enjoy sports. Based on a true story, the facts behind the movie make it an even more remarkable film, especially the philosophies employed by coach Glewix’s and how incredible they have worked in real life. Perhaps Christian movie reviews should focus on critiquing what “message” a movie has to offer?

New Moon, the sequel to Twilight is going to be filmed, starting early March. The movie scenes will include many locations, thus will not be all filmed in the one area. The cast has been confirmed, and the film will be directed by new guy, Chris Weitz. The New Moon movie will be an interesting movie to see when it comes out, as there are high expectations by the huge twilight fan base, and being pressed for time, can the Twilight Saga live up to its name?
To give variety to the audience, the New Moon Movie will be filmed in a mixture of locations. Los Angeles, California, USA is on the list, most likely a lot of work to be done in the studios however they may decide to film outside to capture city scenarios.
